THE SEARH FOR TRUE NORTH
You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. John 8:32

MAGNETIC
DECLINATION MAP

Flying the hundreds of thousands of miles that we travel, I enjoy talking to pilots. A Delta pilot shared with me that one challenge in transatlantic travel is navigation. On a boat they can take a fix on the North Star but at 600 mph at 30,000 feet a danger is magnetic declination. This is the variation between magnetic north (the direction the end of a compass needle points) and true north. |

The subtle variation between coordinates based on compass reading that appear to point the right direction may take you on a 1000 mile detour. Please click the interactive map to get an idea of challenge of discovering true North. Try to follow the zero declination line and you will see the difficulties of tracking true north. IF this is true of the navigation of a vehicle, vessel or aircraft, how much more important that we have a handle on navigation for our lives!
It is critical that we, as believers, have a "fix" on the "True North" of God's will for our lives. If the subtle magnetic variation on the terrestrial plane can detour a journey, how much more the pervasive influence of culture, Satanic interference and the relentless opposition of self can exert to divert us from God's purposes. |
Self-confidence is dangerous even to the most devout Christian. We are in danger of losing TRUE NORTH and forgetting that we are nothing without Him, and that Jesus Christ is our all in all. We need to be on guard against the sin of ancient Jews. They imagined themselves to be “free,” at the same time Roman soldiers occupied their city. |
When you begin to wander from "True North," self imposed direction leads to self induced deception. Thinking you're going the right direction, shifting magnetic fields of circumstance and justification lead you far from God's perfect will for your life. The consequence is the illusion of freedom, while really in chains, Many living in sin imagine they are the truly free people. They cast off sensitivity to conscience and God's word and think they are free. They regard those who radically follow Christ as the slaves,
Sin plays strange tricks with men. Insane people sometimes imagine themselves to be great people. Ministering in a mental institution, I once prayed for an addict who thought he was Abraham Lincoln.
I prayed, "Lord Jesus touch him." |
 |
From the end of the hallway, around the corner, I heard a voice, "I have and I will."
As I looked up, a young man wearing worn sandals and a tattered T-shirt
walked up. He was no more the Lord Jesus than the young man I prayed for was Abraham Lincoln, but that is the natural consequence losing your fix on TRUE north. |
While pilots can depend on instruments to safely navigate storms and navigation confusion, God has given to us His word, a flawless GPS (God's Perfect Solution) . . . His word is absolute- His measure of True North is beyond reproach. As we see in the book of Romans, ever since the creatio.n of the world. God has revealed himself and we are without excuse. More next week! |

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images Romans 1 17:22
