LIBERIA
MISSION
Ministry in Liberia presents a special level of challenge. After 20 years of Civil war, a generation who was born into conflict has known nothing but death and destruction. ... a hollow image of this once strong Christian society. The level of violence in Liberia was not scattered across outlying areas but permeated every city town and social strata in Liberia. Addiction and escape have become a way of life for many who have been so deeply wounded.

This deep wound betrays the promise born in the hearts of the first settlers to reach Liberia's shores in 1816 and the generations that followed. This nation, created in a missionary move among freed American slaves, arrived on a U.S. Navy ship supported by grants from the U.S. Treasury. They came to spearhead black resettlement of Africa's west coast in order to birth a Christian nation that was truly ordained by God to be the land of the free. For over a century they lived the dream of a free Christian society in Africa but two decades of civil unrest and war have left them battered and betrayed. We rolled out a web site for TC . . . www.tcliberia.org. WATCH FOR DAILY UPDATES AT FACEBOOK.com//bernie.gillott.

Buildings

Buildings like this, across from the Baptist guest house where we stayed, were once mirror windowed edifices. Now they stand as empty shells much like the lives of those devastated by the civil war and violence that have permeated this country.

Face of Addiction
The need for Teen Challenge is strategic in this hour. UNODC and DEA reported to us that, of 150,000 ex-combatants recently disarmed, 75% admitted drug abuse and addiction . . . from marijuana, to heroin, to cocaine and diazepam. Drugs, guns and power are a volatile mix. They received $150.00 to turn in a weapon. Unfortunately then, with only a bag of rice, these violent, guilt ridden ex-combatants were released to the streets with no help, no solutions, and no support. Like the smoke rising from the building across from our guest house, there is a dangerous foreboding that the "real war" may be just beginning.

The Teen Challenge steering committee identified 216 Ghettoes and 58 Prostitute Centers in Post War Monrovia alone. Refugee camps, officially closed still have tents teeming with men addicted to drugs. In one grave yard, Rebecca told us of the ministry to prostitutes and addicts who have taken possession of the graves, moving the bones to the side to do their business. The unemployment rate of 75% and illiteracy of 75%, coupled with the backlash of the civil conflict has left these people marginalized and deemed useless. As US A I D and other nations participate in nation building, Teen Challenge must begin the work of Kingdom building in the hearts and lives of these abandoned and discarded people.

The new partnership with Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International will be strategic for Teen Challenge growth both in Monrovia and Lagos Nigeria. We will update you regarding the meetings with Cabinet Ministers, DEA, Health Department and envoy to the President next week. Please pray for Charles Obieze, American TC envoy who is working hard for these meetings.

PRAYER

FOCUS FOR

NOVEMBER

1- Please pray for the Liberia Launch. Charles Obieze and the eight steering committee members are people of impeccable integrity, but they face the difficult challenge of bringing a fractured country and divided church together to mount a powerful and necessary ministry.
2) Please pray for the new Center Opportunities in AFRICA ... Ghana, Liberia, Tanzania and Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique as faithful laborers are working hard to see the ministry launched in their nations.
3) Pray the new steering committee that Mike Zello is establishing for the Teen Challenge in Tanzania and powerful continuing work of John and Annie Marin in Nairobi, Kenya.

4) Pray for safety for the workers of Teen Challenge around the world and the ministry of Kenya Teen Challenge as well as preparations for the launch of the new center in Tanzania.
5) Please pray for Billy Jo Daugherty. I justt recvied this from our friend Evanglesist Steve Hill:
Dear Bern,

billyjoeI just spoke with Sharon Daugherty. Billy Joe and Sharon are the Senior Pastors of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa. Billy Joe is in critical condition on life support. Jeri and I prayed for the family and they put the phone up to Billy Joe's ear when they prayed.

This is very critical. Please pray for our dear friends. "The earnest heartfelt prayers of the righteous avail much" (James 5:16)
6) Pray for workers for the Harvest ...Teen Challenge Centers in 86 countries need staff and we currently have invitations to start Teen Challenge in 43 nations. They are crying out for help. They need the power of God to meet a pressing social need... but we know it has a SPIRITUAL ROOT.
We offer SPIRITUAL RESOURCES to meet the need.
MATTHEW 9: 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
