Overcoming temperatures that topped 110' F, stolen phones, canceled flights, and lost luggage, we are finally home. Despite the opposition, we were blessed by the hospitality of our hosts Rev. John Tandamba, Daniel Salamu and the folks from SIM. It was wonderful to visit Burkina Faso and join the TC team who had braved a 42 hour bus ride home from the GTC West Africa Conference in Accra, Ghana to prepare for our visit.

With over18 million people, Burkina Faso is the 59th largest country in the world by population, the 75th largest country by area (approximately the size of the State of Colorado). Landlocked, Burkina Faso has suffered through recurring droughts & military coups. The 2015 Index of Economic Freedom lists Burkina Faso as the worlds third poorest nation with an estimated poverty rate of 46%.

There have been challenges to the gospel for decades. A former French colony, it gained independence as Upper Volta in 1960. Since independence, the military has on several occasions intervened during times of crisis. In 1983 Capt Thomas Sankara seized power, supported by Russia and Cuba, and adopted radical left-wing policies. He renamed the country Burkina Faso, translated "land of honest men". After 2 recent coups, a successful tentative political rest holds on. Burkina Faso has reserves of gold, but about 90% of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture, which is vulnerable to periodic drought. Cotton is the main cash crop. Burkina Faso is the leading cotton producer in sub-Saharan Africa.

Powerful times on the street in Ouagadougou. It is an extremely strategic time to engage the culture with the good news of the gospel. With the shifting of inland routes, Burkina Faso is bracing for the inevitable increase in drug trafficking

"Comite National de lutte contre la drogue" (National Committee to Combat Drug) sent a project proposal to UNODC aimed at strengthening the national capacities to combat drug trafficking. The annual country report to GIABA, reported most prevalent predicate crimes in Burkina Faso are drug trafficking, corruption, forgery, smuggling precious stones and metals, and capital market crimes. The World Drug Report 2013 cites Burkina Faso for its growing cocaine use, fueled by the rise in the use of the country as a land trafficking route for Europe-bound cocaine.

We took the ministry to the churches and then right to the streets. We encountered people battling poverty, addiction, and hopelessness. From the river and sewers, where Daniel and John took us on the first day, to the slum where we ministered twice, we saw clear evidence that the hope of gospel can make a difference. Local Music teams joined us and we saw the Holy Spirit move powerful.

ON TRYING OR TRUSTING

that I may be ... found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

Philippians 3:9

~ Human Trafficking ~

Trafficking in Persons Report 2013 identified Burkina Faso as a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking. Every year tens of thousands of girls, boys, and women are trafficked from Nigeria to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with promises of jobs as nannies or hairdressers. Most believe they are headed to the US or Europe until they discover they have been sold into sexual slavery, doomed to pay back a growing and insurmountable debt

From forced labor as farm hands, gold panners and beggars, girls are exploited in the commercial sex trade from Mali to Cote d'Ivoire, and as a destination for children trafficked from other countries in the region, such as Ghana, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria.

~ ~ On the Street ~ ~
After a day begging on the street, he took what little he had, rather than buying food, he spends it on glue. That is not a water bag at his feet, but the bag he uses to huff solvents to take the hunger pains away. When we came by, he had already nodded off. After feeding him and ministering the good news, he received Christ into His heart and followed us.
It was wonderful to see how God touched the hearts and lives of so many that we prayed for as they raise their hand to invite Jesus Christ into their lives.
Bern

I have not been able to find a Scripture in the New Testament where God says,"Try harder, just do the best you can.”

We are born with a selfish, self-centered, self-indulgent heart. From there, it only gets worse because we move from self- indulgence to self-improvement, creating self-proclaimed self-made men. Unfortunately, In the end, at the center of all we do is self.

In Romans 7 the apostle Paul brings that into focus:
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want...
Rom 7:18-19

Paul was not looking in his heart for the strength to be a new improved Paul, He admitted, "no good thing dwells in me." God is not interested in making a better version of me, but in that I find my place of surrender to his will so that I can die to self and He can create that “new creation " (II Corinthians 5:17)

Even beyond society's cult of self improvement is the growing number of "feel good" preachers making the same promises with scraps of scriptures veneered over with feel good promises. One pastor/author offers, Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day. We have replaced the “eternity centered” good news with a man-centered feel good gospel. In today’s gospel, the focus is on “personal accomplishment and “finding myself."

Another preacher declares . . . “At the start of each new day, remind yourself: “I am talented. I am creative. I am greatly favored by God. I am equipped. I am well able. I will see my dreams come to pass.” Declare those statements by faith and before long, you will begin to see them in reality.”

The most important issue is not what "I am," but who He Is and What He Has Done. It’s not how hard you try, at the end of the day, it’s how hard you die. I promise to make myself meek ... get right … The closer I get to meekness, proclaiming my efforts to accomplish it, announcing my new-found humility. I have now managed to find my way to self-proclaimed pride.

In high school in the“meetings,”the 12 step guru told me that I needed to be willing to surrender to “a” power greater than myself. While that has a profound similarity to the gospel, real change happens not when you surrender to “a” power but to “the" power which can only be found in Jesus

It is much easier to do for God than to live from God. And even then, no matter how hard we try, we always seem to live with a nagging sense that we have not done enough. That focus on self is the clearest evidence that we have missed it. The key truth is that it t is not what we have done, but what He has done. We need to connect our posture on earth with our position in Christ --in heaven.

I’m not seeking a better version of me, but the death of the old me. Trying harder, adding to our effort can easily be carried into religion, or even worse into a relationship with the Lord Jesus. I am convinced that that is why Paul reminds us in Hebrews that we live, not by human effort but
"We live by faith, not by sight."

God’s plan is not behind you it is in front of you. Stop looking backward at the things you cannot change and embrace His promise as you reach for all that remains.

Trying is about self (what I can do)...

rusting is all about God (what He has already done).

~ ~ One Lost Phone - 3 boys found ~ ~

When the meeting started we were excited about the crowd, kids, and the hunger for change. As we ministered the crowd pressed against our sound van, Cathy was juggling the camera, i Phone with the tracks and the press of the crowd, with the phone tucked safely behind the sound board in the van. As I was singing Cristo es Mon Saveur the track suddenly stopped. I thought,"Well that's a bit abrupt." but began to intro the next song when Cathy frantically signaled. Someone had run up and snatched the phone (with the tracks) right out of the van.

As I handed the mic off to Naba (singing with CDs,) and I went to the van to sort out a strategy to continue. Several boys walked up and said, "They stole your phone, now the brunnie (white man) will go home."

I gave him a fist bump and a wink and said, "They can rob my phone but they cannot steal our message. Jesus loves you. The devil may take my phone but I will not give up on all of you." As the ministry continued we hooked up my i pad and sang again. after I ministered the word, at the altar -on, the street God moved powerfully as over 70 prayed to receive Jesus.

The following day, several boys came to brother John to say they thought they knew who had my phone. They returned my AT&T SIMM card. They said that they gave us the name of the boys who had the phone, they would kill them.

John shared, "This is s your chance to come into the program." As I left I had a chance to pray with the boys at the TC Center.

One boy's nose was still bleeding from huffing glue, but I know God is going to do a work in their lives. After arrival, they collapsed on the benches exhausted God turned the enemy's attack to a opportunity for a miracle. I don't know if my phone will ever be recovered but Cathy and I rejoice for 3 boys found!

John Tandamba and Daniel work closely with the street people The boys traded in their "works" for huffing ... glue, a bag and a cloth-- for the word of God. Thank God for
HOPE and NEW LIFE.

THE UNBRIDLED JOY OF SALAVATION

After ministry the TC Team provided food for those who who remained for the Word.

1) URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

Urgent news from Samaritans Purse from Chaplains with Rapid Response Team. Please pray & pass to others.

Dear Friends,
We received the following text message from Sean Malone who leads Crisis Relief International (CRI).

"We lost the city of  Queragosh (Qaraqosh). It fell to ISIS and they are beheading children  systematically. This is the city we have been smuggling food to. ISIS has pushed back Peshmerga (Kurdish forces) and is within 10 minutes of where our CRI team is working. Thousands more fled into the city of Erbil last night. The UN evacuated its staff in Erbil.  Our Samaritans Purse team is unmoved and will stay.

 Prayer cover needed!"
Please pray sincerely for the deliverance of the people of Northern Iraq from the terrible advancement of ISIS and its extreme Islamic goals for mass conversion or death for Christians across this region.
May I plead with you not to ignore this email. Do not  forward it before you have prayed through it. Then send it to as many people as possible. Send it to friends and Christians you may know. Send it to your  prayer group. We need to stand in the gap for our fellow Christians.

2) Accra Ghana

Severe rains in Ghana, on Wednesday, 3rd June, have taken more than 200 lives. Many caused by a fire outbreak at a fuel station at the same time it was raining and flooding.

The head office of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, was not spared either. The Book Shop, publishing machines of the Literature Centre, newly published Sunday school books for distribution nationwide, 2 brand new Toyota pickups, generators, and other items,  running into hundreds of thousands of dollars were destroyed by the floods.
All activities at the headquarters have come to a standstill. Operations in the office are moving temporarily to the AG Guest House until further notice.

3) BURKINA FASO

Please pray for the team in Burkina Faso as they continue to reach out to the streets and the churches of all Ouagadougou. As many of you know my brand new i Phone 6 was stolen while ministering on the street right out of the sound truck in front of Cathy and we are praying that cooperation with the street people that met Jesus will be able to recover my phone.

4) FINANCES

The theft of my i Phone 6 and the cost of many flights that had to be rebooked in Africa and for our US return have put a real hit on our finances at a time when summertime giving has dipped a bit. Please prayerfully consider a gift this month to help us take take care of these unexpected expenses. May God bless you as you partner with us.

5) PUERTO RICO

Please pray for a powerful move of God as we head to a Bayamon Puerto Rico next week for spiritual emphasis with Dr. Rodney Hart and the combined men's and women's ministries of Puerto Rico Teen Challenge

Pray for our ministry to the students as well as preparation for Rock the Block, San Juan Puerto Rico in 2016 as we evaluate options, sites and opportunities.

6) TANZANIA-

Please pray for our upcoming ministry in Dodoma, Tanzania with Johannes Amritzer and the SOS Missions Team. Brother Johannes, Brother Fiori, and crusade director Peter are expecting over 30,000 each day for a large outdoor festival in the capital of Tanzania near the University. It is a critical need to engage Tanzania's intellectual and spiritual elite as well as street people with the good news of the gospel.

We also appreciate your prayers as I will remain after the crusade to minister to the pastors at the District Conference of the Assemblies of God in July.

7) REBECCA:

Please pray for our lovely daughter, Rebecca and her husband Michael, who will be bringing our eighth grandchild into the world in Florida. Her due date is July 4. Please pray for the health of mama and the baby and that he will arrive on time so that I can visit with them, and pray a grandfather's blessing, before I leave for the upcoming missions trip to Africa.

8) THE HARVEST

Let's pray for the global advance of the gospel. Pray for workers for the Harvest ...Teen Challenge Centers in 106 countries need staff and we currently have invitations to start Teen Challenge in 32 nations. They are crying out for help. They need the power of God to meet a pressing social need... but we know it has a SPIRITUAL ROOT.
We offer SPIRITUAL RESOURCES to meet the need.
MATTHEW 9: 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.
