Santush (left) lost his arm to infection injecting "brown sugar" heroin. He has been unable to kick his heroin habit. We saw him again in a Pune sewer where he continues to "mainline drugs" into his amputated stump. Timothy and I prayed with him, but he needs help.
At TC Pune, students rescued from the streets & brothels experience hope and freedom so they will not wind up hopeless on the street, like Santush. |

SPARSH in Hindi means TOUCH. SPARSH Teen Challenge Pune, is reaching the "untouchables" of India. Timothy and Joyce Hiwrale, who were trained and served the ministry of Bombay Teen Challenge for many years, now have tackled a new challenge. In Ramtekdi Slum and the Red light district of Pune, their ministry touches women and children who have been trafficked, prostitutes, kids on the streets, and those struggling with addiction. They rescue victims once discarded by society, offering life-transformation and empowering them for new life. |
| SPARSH TEEN CHALLENGE- the MIRACLES |
| Human Trafficking in India has been a continuing tragedy in India since the time of the Peshwa, 1749 to 1818. In Pune, prostitution has grown with industrialization and urbanization. Over the last few decades, the escalating crisis of trafficking women and children is a national stigma. |
Trafficking affects a large number of girls and families. In poor homes in India, many cannot afford to eat even 2 meals a day. Families, lured by the "dream" of sufficient food, clothes and shelter, even just the basic necessities, are trapped by the lies of unscrupulous impostors who promise a dream but deliver a nightmare. Most innocent girls think they are coming to the city to learn computer skills but find themselves trapped, compelled to become prostitutes to release their family from the bondage of their debt. Shipping containers, like the one to the left, become the lifellong prison for women trapped in human trafficking in Pune. |
Maahi was born into poverty and sold into slavery. Her mother died when she was five. A friend that had custody sold her to a brothel. At 8 years old, they started using her for the sex trade. When she was unable to entertain customers, she was beaten with iron rods and given alcohol and drugs. She escaped and fled to Pune with her daughter, Nandini. Maahi hated selling her body for survival and she came to a place called Kondhwa NIBM Road. This is where Timothy and Joyce found Maahi & her daughter, Nandini, now 6 years old. |
The street, surrounded by pain, was home for Nandini, Maahi's oldest daughter.Nandini first came to TC after Tim and Joyce found her on the street banging on car doors, begging at the traffic signals. Then a year later, as Nandini pleaded for her mother, Maahi came in off the street. Years of wounding and pain and the need for healing have made ministering to her a real challenge. Right now, she really needs our prayers. Please stand with us for restoration of this beautiful family. |
| LONG DAYS-SHORT NIGHT-GREAT MINISTRY |
Evidence of a great day of ministry? The dust on the sandals tells the story. We prayed early and then went to the streets. Timothy is a tireless worker. He took me through red light, slums and addiction corridors. Proof of his commitment to broken people was evidenced as everywhere we went, addicts called him by name and asked him to pray for them. They pleaded, "I want to get free, when will you have a center to help me?" |
As we walked the streets, ministering to addicts and alcoholics, this woman pointed us towards the sewer. "Please, help my son," she wept in Hindi. She pointed where the men were shooting up. We entered the "shooting gallery" in the sewer. Through the dim light, one man grabbed a clean needle and fled. The eyes of some cried out, “Can I find freedom?” There is a desperate need for a male residential discipleship program for addicts here in Pune. |
Timothy walked us through the Ramtekdi Slum. With 90,000 people crammed into a small area, facing destitute poverty, the women are rag pickers, the men drown their pain in Hath - Bhatti (desi daru) a potent addictive home brew made with rotten fruit and chemicals from formaldehyde to who knows what. The World Health Organization projects that 90% of the men in Ramtekdi Slum are addicted to desi daru. It has such a powerful hold that many who try to detox from Hath - Bhatti have experienced psychotic breaks or died. |

| Pune India |
Pune is located in western India, in the Maharashtra state. The metropolitan region has a population of 5 million. It is the 8th largest city in India and also one of the most developed, with the highest per capita income in the country. It is a study in contrasts because a large percentage of their population lives in abject poverty. Pune is now a major industrial center |
and the last years have brought major investments in the software and automobile sector.

God is truly at work here in Lucknow TC Challenge. Things have surely changed since my visit in 2005 ... GTC provided seed funds to add 30 feet to their building. It was stark. NOW, the facilities are incredible. The well-groomed grounds with new walled gardens and hundreds of trees are beautiful. The sense of the presence of God here is breathtaking! |
| |
| A busy schedule of ministry, teaching, music, and church services as well as a wonderful Alumni Celebration and the graduation made for a power-packed week of ministry. |
| LUCKNOW TEEN CHALLENGE GRADUATION |
| God brought needy men from families and communities across Uttar Pradesh during the early days as Lucknow TC began their outreach in rented facilities. From the beginning Lucknow Teen Challenge has a ground-breaking ministry, Not only ministering to Hindus, Muslims and atheists, but also even men coming from psychiatric hospitals. They have powerful documentation in the lives of men set free from psychosis, multiple personalities and other mental anomalies. |

NOW CONCERNING IDOLS
For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things.
1Cor 8:5-6 |
It was interesting to be here in India for Maha Shivratri, a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva. Also known as padmarajarathri, in Lucknow they called it Shivaratri, literally the great night of Shiva. Within the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Brahma is the creator, Vishnu, the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. |
It is said that, Brahma grew in a lotus out of the navel of the sleeping Vishnu. The daily change of light & darkness is attributed to the activity of Brahma. On the great night of Shiva, Hindus come with fasting and special prayer. Without getting into the details of the homage paid to assuage the anger of the great lord of destruction, it provides a clear contrast to the message of the gospel. Whether you believe Hindus recognize 1.3 million deities or 33 million like Gadadhara Pandit Dasa explains this in detail in his Huffington Post article,For us, the truth is the Lord Jesus is eternal, uncompromising, and a singular point of life to meet the needs of all who call upon His name.
When I minister to Hindus, for many of them, the key is identifying your need, and then finding the right God to meet that need. I am so grateful that in Jesus Christ, we do not need to search any longer. Every need is met in Father’s love through His Son and the power of the Holy Spirit.
To see thousands of devotees sacrfice to flock to a statue to pray and bring special offerings to protect them from the lord of destruction pray rhey will find real faith. |
Religion is man’s search for God in a vain effort to satisfy the demands of an angry God.The gospel is God's search for man that He might reveal His never ending love.
It is not our sacrifice that pays the price for forgiveness,
. ..
God has paid it already through His dear Son.
We don’t have to come to a statue.
. . . The living God has already come to us.
We are not escaping the anger of the destroyer,
. . .
but embracing the love of a Father.
Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life."
I would say with the apostle Paul . . . for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things. |
SIBERIA TEEN CHALLENGE

Please pray for the TC ministry in Novokuznetsk. As you know the judge will make a decision this Friday. Today we heard that a press conference is scheduled on Thursday with the city administration. Our opponents are bringing a professor from the Russian Orthodox Seminary in Moscow who teaches on totalitarian cults. He is known for his hideous accusations against Evangelical churches.

| ON TO SPARSH |
| SPARSH in Hindi means TOUCH. Teen Challenge in Pune, India is reaching out to the untouchables. SPARSH Is the newest Teen Challenge center here in India. Recently recognized by the GTC office for the outstanding work of Timothy and Joyce Hiwrale in the Red light district, they minister to children of addicts and prostitutes, as well as to addicts on the street. |
Shraddha made this fresh floral lei herself. With both her mother and father caught up |
| in addiction, living in an area where girls her age often go missing, her mother heard about SPARSH and brought her to TC. Now, her face glows with the promise of new life in Jesus. With 17 mothers and children in TC, there is a promise of new life for them all. Pray for this week of ministry with SPARSH. |

| UTTAR PRADESH STATE |
Uttar Pradesh once home to powerful empires of ancient and medieval India,
including Magadha, Nanda, Mauryan, Kushan, Gupta, Gurjara, Pala and Mughal empires Is now the most populous state in India with over 200 million people.
Religion is very important in India, with deep historical roots; Hinduism and Buddhism both originated here. Most people in India practice Hinduism, but about one-quarter of all Muslims living in India live in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Deeply religious people find solace in pilgrimages to religious shines, such as the Taj Mahal.
The most recent census by the government of India reported only 212,000 Christians in all of Uttar Pradesh (1%), most of them Catholic, and a only a small percentage of evangelicals practicing a great commission lifestyle. With 1.9% Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi 2.5%, there are exciting opportunities to share the love of God in U.P. Dr. Abraham Varghese has pioneered a powerful, culturally relevant model of Teen Challenge with great commission principles in the face of incredible opposition and constant persecution. |

| TEEN CHALLENGE LUCKNOW- MIRACLES OF GROWTH |
The prayer tower on the right with Doctor Varghese interceding is an iconic snapshot of the fasting, prayers and miracles which are the centerpiece of the Lucknow Ministry. Dr Varghese could often have been seen for hours interceding in his prayer tower, overlooking the 10 acres that God provided. Now, a thriving complex of facilities fill that 10 acre property! |

Seven years ago, we gathered to pray and break ground for a new Administration building. This beautiful building that once housed dining room, and chapel was the launching pad for the new 100 bed facility. |
The admin building is a small part of the unparalleled growth of Lucknow TC.They have completed phase one of the 100 bed facility and are well into phase 2. |
Final phase under construction.
The final phase of the 100 bedded center is now under construction. The vision is not only to add 40 more students, but a north India training facility to continue to extend the outreach of Teen Challenge from Afghanistan, to Kathmandu, Nepal, Burma, and across India. |

2) SIBERIA: URGENT UPDATE!!
Their goal is to not only do harm to Teen Challenge but also to close our church. This is why the press conference is happening the day before the court case. Newspaper articles have been written with false accusations against us personally as well as against the church. Our confidence is in the Lord! We would greatly appreciate your prayers against this attack that the enemy would be silenced and that God will be glorified.
Thank you for standing with us!
We thank God for you,
Ilya and Janet
