HAITI- History and
Roots of Spiritual Bondage
Some have called the catastrophic earthquake on Jan 12, 2010 God's curse on the dark and sinisterdevil worshiping Island of Haiti. The Haitian government reported that 230,000 people died In the devastation of the catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake, 300,000 were injured and 1,000,000 were left homeless. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded and an estimated 3 million people were impacted. |

Calling this cataclysmic event a judgment of God is spiritually short-sighted. It misses the point that God is preparing to pour out His glory in Haiti in response to a faithful remnant that are calling on His name. Fires of revival are coming to Haiti! When Chritstians stand in the place of God to say who will be punished or how judgment will come, it does violence to the cause of Christ. Truth is, if earthly punishment were to come, but for the grace of God, we might be first in line! |

Many find the motto of the Haitian republic, “L’Union Fait la Force” (Strength Through Union) a grim joke, BUT it is the word of the Lord to the Church in Haiti in this hour. It is true that in the wake of the January 12th earthquake, some Haitians still find consolation in Voodoo. One study reports that Haitians are 80% per cent Catholic and "100% Vodouist." this may be statistically accurate, but my experience in Haiti does not confirm this observation! There are coals of Spiritual revival simmering in Haiti. Even though voodoo worshipers are a common sight in villages and millions may be under bondage of voodoo power and witchcraft, there is a holy remnant emerging. In light of that, do not forget that there is no power so great that it can stop the move of God, and no abyss so deep that the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ cannot pierce that darkness. |
Some say Haiti was dedicated to Satan in 1791
On August 14, 1791 a Haitian slave ceremonially scarified a pig in Voodoo worship.
|
Through this act they committed the entire Island nation of Haiti, and dedicated it to Satan." According to Vernon Brewer President of World Help, "For 200 years Haiti has been an official Voodoo nation."
For the 200th anniversary, some wanted to rededicate the island to Satan. Some walked 17 hours to PLAINE DU NORD, carrying candles and a heavy spirit for a four-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimage, one of the most important in the Voodoo religion, begins on a Wednesday with rituals to Ogou, the god of war, and ends Saturday with rites to the goddess of love, Erzuli.
We believe God's love has the final word! |

Voodoo reflects the rage and ecstasy that once threw off the shackles of slavery. |
|
Vodou (from the Dahomean vodu, spirit or deity) is a religion that marries elements of Catholicism with rituals of ancestral Africa. Many credit voodoo with freeing Haiti from the domination of France. On the night of August 15, 1791, it is said that a ceremony dedicating the Island to Satan marked the beginning of revolt as African slaves overthrew their French slave masters and the world’s first black republic was born. A rain of burning cane straw, pungent and sweet-smelling, drifted over the plantations as the slaves set them ablaze.
Slave leader, Toussaint Louverture led this Vodou-inspired uprising. |
In the 1700's Haiti, called the Jewel of the Antilles,
was once the richest colony in all the world! |
Economists estimate that in the 1750s, Haiti provided as much as 50% of the gross national product of France. The French imported sugar, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, cotton, the dye indigo and other exotic products. In France they were refined, packaged and sold all over Europe. Incredible fortunes were made from this tiny colony. In their desperation to get out from under the cruel hand of their vicious slave owners they rebelled. Desperate to balance the odds against an overwhelming force,Slave leader, Toussaint Louverture led them to voodoo for help. Without pointing to causes, the fact is that after dedicating the Island to Satan and finding political independence, even before the devastating earthquake, Haiti , once the richest country in the hemisphere is now has become the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere,
January 1804 marked political freedom and Haiti became an emblem of the abolition of slavery so many longed for. Unfortunately, two centuries after independence, Haiti is the battered pauper of the Americas. wracked with pain and poverty. Only 17 years younger than the United States, Haiti was once hailed as a herald of freedom as the world’s first black republic. Many say that this freedom is an illusion and that Haiti still remains in many ways a police state. The slave owners may have changed, but in a real way, for many, slavery continues. For almost 200 years, since "independence," Haiti has been split on every side. Mulatto against black; the military against democracy; African animism against Christianity.
Haiti has experienced horrible devastation, but after the earthquake, the president called for a day of fasting and prayer for the nation. What a miracle in this country that had formerly been dedicated to Satan.
With only five days notice, Christian leaders gathered 1,000,000 people for a prayer meeting. On that day, the winds of Pentecost did indeed blow as 3,000 confessed faith in Jesus—among them 101 voodoo priests. We believe the back of the strongman of voodoo and occult stronghold was broken and a new Haiti will arise. We have heard the call to come to the serve the people of Haiti |
Poppa Doc Duvalier's reign of terror. |
The 1957-1971 dictatorship of François “Papa Doc” Duvalier was a betrayal that instilled even more fear in the population. Duvalier entertained more than a causal interest in Vodou. His wardrobe of black suits and bowler hats lent him the image of the animist divinity Baron Samedi, who haunts thecemeteries in a top hat and tails. He was followed by His son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, nick-named "Bébé Doc" or "Baby Doc" (born July 3, 1951) was President of Haiti from 1971 until his overthrow by a popular uprising in 1986. Centuries of spiritual darkness, slavery, abuse and evil have certainly impacted Haiti. The endemic poverty, political corruption, and abuse are all made worse by the practice of voodoo. |

The undelaying despair can doom people--racked with helplessness and despair-- a discouragement that leaves them less prepared or equipped, unable to respond and rebound from the misery of poverty and the devastation wreaked by hurricanes, mud slides, storms of the last 50 years |
Haitian Vodou shares many traits with other faiths of the African diaspora. |
Including the Louisiana Voodoo of New Orleans, Santería and Arará of Cuba, and Candomblé and Umbanda of Brazil. A Haitian Vodou temple is called an Hounfour. When someone surrenders to Satan and follows occult practices, they believe a lie. In addition to the spiritual consequences, at a human level, paganism has a terrible fatalism built into it. As people see themselves subject to a random universe and great natural forces that they are helpless to control, the only refuge is to appease gods of their creation in hope that they will find protection, prosperity and peace.
With the fatalism of Voodoo comes a deep helplessness and a deeper despair. |
Believing that nothing can be done to find freedom, nothing is done. Captured, chained and enslaved by others, for many, all that remains is a mentality of hopelessness and despair as life circles in a downward spiral. In the past, the helpless slave becomes even more helpless. Then, even after finding political freedom, Haitians have become the victim of men of terror and power who enslaved him and abused them further. Only the power of God's love can break thr cycle of children are brought up with the same assumption of helplessness and being enslaved.
The question we have to ask here is, "What sort of society results from years and years of slavery, abuse, torture and service to Satan? " Perhaps as we consider the cultural, environmental and spiritual roots of Haiti's plight, we can conclude is not God's displeasure with Haiti, but a collection of man's inhumanity to man. Is it possible, that the poverty of Haiti is the consequence of the deep ancestral horrors Haitians have suffered that has distorted and degraded hope or vision for the future.
I don't believe that Haiti's problems are an arbitrary curse by "our God" who "happens to like Christians" better than "devil worshipers." It is ill-advised and totally presumptuous to conclude that in Haiti God is punishing the innocent for the sins of their ancestors. It is true that ANY culture reaps a poisonous harvest from Satan as a consequence of their dedication to a lie, BUT the problem IS this crumbling world system, NOT God's vindictive anger. God is raising up a holy remnant as a channel for His blessing in a way never experienced in Haiti.
God's love is calling all of us away from slavery whether a huistory bondage, or eslavement to possession. God is calling all of us back to HIS promise and into Hope & Destiny. |
